All lanes of traffic on the E40 motorway to the coast have been reopened after a chain collision on Sunday morning at Beernem, West Flanders, the Flemish Mobility Centre announced in the early afternoon.

The incident caused heavy traffic jams after four cars were involved in an accident and three more were damaged.

The left and middle lanes were unusable because of the accident, which caused traffic jams towards the coast. Delays of up to one and a half hours were experienced.

All traffic lanes are now accessible, but the Flemish Mobility Centre recommends that motorists take an alternative route. The area can be bypassed via the E17 and E403 motorways from Ghent and Bruges, or via the E34/A11 from Antwerp.
