On Sunday morning, the lifeless body of a man was pulled out of the water in Ghent, near the Ferdinand Lousbergskaai, which is close to the zone where the Ghent Festivities are taking place.

A passer-by noticed the body around 08:00. The emergency services arrived on the scene, but were unable to help. How the victim – a man in his fifties – ended up in the water remains unclear for the time being.

The police are currently examining camera footage from the party area to find out exactly what happened. According to the East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office, it concerns a suspicious death.

The laboratory, the examining magistrate, the medical examiner and the public prosecutor are currently at the scene to make the necessary observations. "The Public Prosecutor's Office is keeping all options open."
