New car registrations in Belgium continue to fall and currently are 15.9% below the same period last year, according to numbers released on Wednesday by the Federation of the Automobile and Cycle Industry (Febiac).

Belgium’s new car registration decline is higher than that of Europe (14%). Compared to 2019, new car registrations have declined by 37%, Belga News Agency reported.

However, the second-hand market saw a much smaller decline, with only a 9.27% change from last year.

Electric cars

The popularity of electric cars in Belgium continues to grow. Electric cars account for 31.6% of new car registrations, compared to 23.5% in 2021.

Businesses also favour plug-in cars, registering 85% of (fully electric) BEV and 90% of (plug-in hybrid) PHEV models in the first six months of the year.

At the European level, petrol cars accounted for 38.5% of sales, while diesel accounted for 17% and hybrids 22%, which continued to grow.

The rise in electrification comes as the EU decided to ban the sale of cars with combustion engines running on diesel, petrol and natural gas from 2035.
