About 30,000 Belgians received their paper tax return late in June due to problems at bpost, and now have a new deadline to fill in their tax return: exactly one month after the date they received the documents.

Due to "unforeseen circumstances at bpost," the sending of several thousand tax returns in paper format was delayed in June. The taxpayers concerned were not required to send back the return before 30 June, but were given an automatic delay of one month after receiving the mail, spokesperson for the FPS Finance Francis Adyns confirmed to Belga News Agency.

"We have the date on which these people received their tax return on record," Adyns said. "To this must be added 20,000 people who, for one reason or another, did not receive a paper return."

Citizens who used tax-on-web last year, activated the eBox or made the declaration via a proxy did not receive a paper version this year. The deadline for filing the tax return online expired on 15 July. For those who submit the return via an accountant or tax advisor, the deadline is 30 September.
