A man was burned and hospitalised when an electrical short-circuit caused a house fire in Mouscron, a town near the French border.

At about 04:40 on Tuesday morning, the fire services were called to a fire at a single-family home on Rue Bornoville.

When they arrived, the four residents had left the burning house, with one of them, a man in his thirties, suffering second-degree burns to his right hand and left leg. He was subsequently taken to hospital.

The fire was accidental, according to Philippe Verhaeghe, who led the intervention.

"There was a short circuit in a car battery booster," he explained, "and the fire was immediately contained, but the home produced a lot of smoke, which had to be ventilated."

He stated that the property will be habitable again once an electrician had inspected any more damage.
