A 19-year-old man died by drowning on Wednesday at a quarry in Hainaut Province, rescuers said, confirming media reports.
Divers from the Eastern Hainaut rescue zone intervened on Wednesday afternoon at the Gralex quarry in Mont-sur-Marchienne (Charleroi, Hainaut Province) when the young man disappeared after diving into the water.
The victim was part of a group of friends who had been swimming in the quarry, which is off limits to the public.
A few minutes after the intervention of the divers, the body of the victim was brought to the surface. Rescuers tried to resuscitate him but failed.
The 19-year-old victim was from Brussels, the emergency services said.
