Despite rising energy prices, which have not spared petrol and diesel products, consumption in Belgium has increased, according to a L'Echo report.

According to FPS Economy statistics released on Friday, no less than 7.296 billion litres of diesel and 2.980 billion litres of petrol were sold between July 2021 and June 2022, representing an increase over the previous year.

This was not surprising to Olivier Neirynck, technical director of the Belgian federation of fuel traders, who told L'Echo that "due to Covid-19, people have travelled less far and more by car."

While petrol consumption is at an all-time high, diesel consumption is still lower than it was before the pandemic, which FPS Economy attributes to higher excise duties on diesel.
