Freight train fire blocks railway traffic in Wetteren

A fire caused by a freight train near Kwatrecht Station in Wetteren blocked railway traffic between Melle and Schellebelle on Wednesday evening, according to a spokesperson for railway network operator, Infrabel.

The fire brigade was deployed to the site to fight the fire, which is believed to have occurred when an overheated brake on the train burst into flames. The flames then spread to the verge.

Infrabel spokesman Thomas Baeken said the train was not transporting hazardous substances.

No railway traffic was possible on Wednesday evening between Melle and Schellebelle, on the so-called slow connection (Railway line 50) between Brussels and Ghent. Baeken said trains were being diverted wherever possible.
