Ecopower, the energy cooperative that supplies green electricity in Flanders, has told its 56,000 members that it will stop issuing fixed-price contracts.

In an email sent to customers, the energy supplier said that it had no choice but to increase and adjust its prices to current market conditions.

From 1 November, cooperators will pay a rate based both on fixed parameters and variables. Ecopower, which also has to obtain supplies from the market where electricity is much more expensive than its own production, says current conditions justify its decision.

“Costs have become so high and unpredictable that a price increase and system change to partially variable pricing from 1 November 2022 is necessary,” it said.

The cooperative also warned its cooperators of a “substantial price increase.”
