The Flemish Health Care Agency has implemented protective measures in a nursing home in Oostrozebeke, West Flanders, where several suspicious deaths have occurred, the agency announced on Friday.

An inspection of the residence revealed serious flaws in procedures and medication safety. “Troubling and incomprehensible,” commented Dirk Dewolf, general administrator of the Flemish Health Care Agency.

The protective measures imposed at the nursing home are meant to guarantee the safety of the residents. An external expert will now finetune the medication safety and wound-care procedures. No more arrivals will be allowed, the agency added.

Since 2020, an investigation has been underway into three suspicious deaths of residents of the nursing home as well as five suspicious clinical pictures. An issue of particular concern is the presence of an abnormal quantity of insulin in the blood of the victims.

According to the Flemish Health Care Agency, neither the public prosecutor’s office nor the residential care centre informed it of the serious incidents that had occurred at the nursing home.
