In Antwerp Zoo, for the first time in three years, a king penguin has been born. After an incubation period of 54 days, the chick wriggled out of the eggshell in 72 hours with some help from the caretakers.

”The little king penguin with a brown-grey head immediately moved from the incubator back to the warm legs of the parents, his personal nursery,” said spokeswoman Ilse Segers.

The thick eggshell went to the lab where it was examined by the Zoo scientists. The sex was determined by DNA analysis of the blood vessels and the little penguin is a male, who will be given a name with an ‘X’.
