Avian flu has been detected at a poultry farm in Bocholt, in the Belgian province of Limburg, announced the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC).

The detection of bird flu happened on Tuesday. Investigations confirmed that it is the dangerous highly pathogenic variant of the H5N1 virus.

A 3-kilometre protection zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone have been demarcated around the affected farm. The surveillance zone includes the entire municipality of Bocholt and parts of Peer, Bree, Hamont-Achel, Kinrooi, Oudsbergen and Pelt.

There is a compulsory caging of all poultry within the surveillance zone. Within a few days, a specialised firm will cull the poultry at the affected farm.
