An investigation is currently underway following threats against Belgian Justice Minister, Vincent Van Quickenborne, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Saturday.

Belgium’s federal police have decided to place the politician under reinforced security, and he will have to cancel participation in certain events in which he was due to participate next week.

As part of the investigation, three people have been arrested in the Netherlands overnight from Friday to Saturday, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office said, requesting they be transferred to Belgium.

During the last week, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office “has been informed of a possible threat (to) Van Quickenborne." An investigation was immediately opened and entrusted to an investigating judge of the judicial district of West Flanders,” the Prosecutor’s Office announced.

“The first elements of the investigation quickly indicated that this threat should be taken seriously.

The National Crisis Centre immediately took the necessary measures to place the Minister under reinforced security. No details will be given on these measures. Given the circumstances, Van Quickenborne will not participate in a number of activities planned for the next few days, according to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office.
