Flemish Government allocates €550,000 for anti-poverty organisations

For the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Flemish Government have announced that they will be allocating funds to 63 organisations fighting against poverty, to help them lessen the burden of rising energy costs.

As decreed by the United Nations in 1992, 17 October marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

For this year's edition, the Flemish Minister of Poverty Reduction, Benjamin Dalle, announced that the Regional Government would be allocating €550,000 to help cover the energy costs of 0ver 63 organisations that are actively fighting against poverty in the region.

“Many organisations are committed every day to give people in poverty a voice and helping them, but they are now also confronted with rising energy bills," Dalle explained. "Through this intervention, we are given them some extra breathing room financially,” he added.

The government's aim is that this support will ensure that this winter, people in poverty can continue to count on warm meeting places and a place where their voice can be heard loudly.

“Poverty organisations play such a crucial role in the lives of many people who end up in poverty," Dalle stated.

"Through their voice and support, we can put the poverty issue higher on the political and social agenda,” he added. As a result, “we want to continue and guarantee their activities with this financial support.”
