A pedestrian died after being hit by a train at a level crossing in Wandre, Liège Province, shortly before 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday, railway network operator Infrabel reported.

The accident has disrupted train traffic on Line 40 between Bressoux and Visé. The emergency services and an Infrabel team were dispatched to the scene.

According to early reports, the pedestrian tried to cross the tracks, even though the barriers had been lowered, Infrabel spokesperson Jessica Nibelle said.

It was not immediately known how long the train service between Bressoux and Visé would be interrupted.

The NMBS railway company is operating shuttle buses between the two locations.
