Up to 26,000 speeding offences have been recorded on the E19 motorway since the installation of a new 'radar-tronçon' (a camera that measures the average speed of vehicles between set distances) in July.

On Wednesday, the Walloon Brabant Public Prosecutor's Office revealed that the latest speed camera located between Nivelles and Braine-le-Château on the E19 motorway had recorded 25,676 speeding offences between 11 July and 30 September.

A spokesperson for the Prosecutor's Office explained that they had followed a zero-tolerance policy as speeds detected came "higher than 120 km/h, giving rise to the drafting of official reports and subsequent legal proceedings."

Sanctions for speeding

Those found to have committed the offence face an array of sanctions, depending on the speed at which they were driving.

The vast majority of offenders have to pay a fine ranging from €80 to €320.

The 160 drivers who were recorded at more than 160 km/h will have to appear before the Nivelles police court. They will also be fined between €328 and €720 and prohibited from driving for at least 15 days.

Other speeders, including those who do not have their domestic registration in order, will be brought in front of the police court and could be permanently banned from driving.
