A 24-hour railway strike began in Belgium at 10pm on Tuesday and will continue throughout Wednesday, as part of the general strike scheduled for 9 November.

The national railway company, SNCB, had already warned that train traffic would be severely disrupted.

The railway network will be closed in most of the provinces of Namur and Luxembourg, and part of Walloon Brabant. Elsewhere in the country, one train in four is expected to run.

According to the SNCB, one IC train -connecting the country’s main cities - out of three will be in service. One S (suburban) train and one L train (omnibus) out of four will also run.

The P trains (morning and evening rush hour) will hardly run at all.

Several stations in the country will have little or no service, the SNCB said.

The Belgian railway company advises travellers who have no alternative to the train to consult the travel planner on the SNCB website or app.
