Belgium's King Philippe on Thursday visited the Circularium, a 20,000m² centre for local innovation and circular production in Anderlecht's Cureghem district.

A total of 30 projects have been installed in the centre, and the Belgian monarch had a first-hand look at three of them.

The Circularium has been set up in a former car complex by the Brussels-based Makettt company, which is also managing the initiative. Its aim is to create an “innovative, attractive and sustainable place for a new type of entrepreneurship and urban economy.”

The various projects that have been set up there all respect the principle of short circuits and circularity, while playing an activating role in the neighbourhood.

The King was first able to discover 'The Free Shop,' whose principle is simple: customers can take away items for free on condition that they write a thank-you note to the person who donated the item to the shop.

The Konlingo start-up then presented King Philippe with its pop-up structure designed for both indoor and outdoor events. Konlingo manufactures structures such as arbours and marquees that are compact, in addition to being easy to assemble and transport.

Finally, the King stopped by the Sonian Wood Cooperative, which transforms wood from the Soignes Forest into architectural and design projects, thus creating a local alternative to the export of this wood to Asia.
