By the end of November, the tax authorities had already sent out almost 4.85 million personal income tax assessment notices. For almost 2.3 million Belgians, the notices inform people that they will get money back.

Every year, many people look forward to the final tax statement to know for sure whether they will get money back or have to pay extra. "Currently, we are on track. We have already sent 4,846,825 assessment notices out of a total of some 7.1 million," said Francis Adyns of FPS Finance. That's just under 20,000 fewer than this time last year. "The refund date is on the assessment notice."

"Of those over 4.8 million, 1,477,732 must pay extra, while 2,289,056 will receive money back," said Francis Adyns of FPS Finance.

Payment deadline doubled

For those who have to pay extra, there is also some good news. In light of the energy crisis, the standard payment period has doubled from two to four months. This also applies to those who already received their tax note in August, September or October, even though those notes still state the two-month payment period.

Those who have difficulties paying the amount in one go can apply for an instalment plan via MyMinfin or via a letter to the tax authorities.
