Challenging photo exhibition explores 'raw' art in four Brussels locations

A challenging photo exhibition 'Photo Brut' dealing with outsider or ‘raw’ art is currently being held in four locations around Brussels: Centrale électrique, Botanique, the Musée Art et Marge and the Tiny Gallery.

The exhibition, titled Photo Brut, is spread these locations and showcases photos from the past and present day, most of which come from the private collection of French filmmaker and producer Bruno Decharme.

Carine Fol, the artistic director of the Centrale électrique, has curated the exhibition and has chosen nearly two hundred photographs from Decharme's collection.

Many of them are and disturbing with some subjects grotesquely metamorphosising their bodies and faces into representations of famous and historical figures, such as Mother Theresa and the Pope, while others show a warts-and-all study of the human form and tackle subjects such as transvestism.

At the Botanique venue , the photographs on show are mainly collages by the Belgian artist Dirk Martens which include erotic and ephemeral montages of people, using photography and paint to create deconstructed or reconstructed ideas of fantastical bodies.

The exhibition in the four locations runs until March 19, 2023.
