More than 200 flights out of the 400 that were scheduled for Friday have already been cancelled at Brussels Airport, due to the national trade union demonstration scheduled for that day, an airport spokeswoman confirmed.

The unions have not explicitly called for a day of strike action but disruption is expected as workers will participate in the demonstration. The airport has called on airlines to cancel flights to avoid chaos.

“At present, more than 50% of planned flights have been cancelled. More flights may be added,” said a Brussels Airport spokeswoman. The airlines have warned the passengers concerned.

The airport advises travellers who will still be leaving on Friday to limit their luggage as much as possible. There could also be disruptions to public transport.
