Antibiotics use bounces back to pre-Covid levels

The taking of antibiotics, which had fallen in recent years, has returned to pre-Coronavirus levels, despite campaigns for their proper use, according to a report on Wednesday in Het Nieuwsblad, based on figures from Belgium's largest health insurers network, CM.

Last year, the volume of antibiotics prescribed rose by 29.6%,” says Evelyn Macken of the network. Compared to their European neighbours, Belgians are heavy consumers of antibiotics, with more than 65 million doses per year.

Some people are now arguing for a part of doctors’ fees to be linked to their prescribing behaviour, with those who over-prescribe antibiotics being liable to be penalised.
