Due to the energy crisis that engulfed Belgium throughout 2022, many Flemish families have opted to pay their energy bills in monthly instalments. According to the Belgian Federation for Energy Suppliers (FEBEG), 12,000 households in Flanders made the switch in 2022, doubling the previous year's amount.

Despite gas prices reaching their lowest level since before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many Flemish households are still wondering how they will be paying their upcoming energy bills.

According to the FEBEG, the number of Flemish households struggling to pay their energy bills doubled in 2022 – with 12,000 families having now applied to pay them in monthly instalments.

However, the monthly amount to be repaid by households has increased from an average of €160 to €330 per month. As a result, suppliers are said to have been more lenient by extending the payment plan from six months to a full year.

Furthermore, the FEBEG has asked that consumers contact their suppliers to assess their payment options and reminded them to bring their monthly advances in line with actual consumption to minimise additional payments on their end-of-year bills.
