An investigating judge in Ghent has decided to release on bail the younger of the two Dutchmen suspected of involvement in the drowning of a man during the Ghent Festivities in July last.
The victim, a 53-year-old man from Ghent, was pushed into the water on 17 July 2022. Not knowing how to swim, he drowned.
Two Dutch men, aged 25 and 23, were subsequently arrested in the Netherlands. The first, handed over to the Belgian justice authorities in August, was placed under arrest by a Ghent investigating judge before the indictment chamber ordered his conditional release. He is suspected of culpable negligence.
The younger man was handed over to Belgium in November last. He was remanded into custody on 4 November for assault and battery without intent to kill, and culpable negligence. An investigating judge decided this week to release him on bail.
