A Russian frigate carrying hypersonic missiles passed off the coast of Belgium on Wednesday, and was shadowed by the Belgian Navy, according to military sources.

The Admiral Gorshkov left Severomorsk, near Finland, on 4 January, accompanied by the supply ship Kama. The two vessels were escorted by ships from the Norwegian and British navies in that order.

On Wednesday, they passed through the Channel, in international waters. “We followed them,” a Belgian military source confirmed. The ships sailed 50 to 60 kilometers from the coast, according to the source.

The Belgian Navy’s escort was part of a “shadowing" routine: the navy has a ship available 24 hours a day for this purpose.

The Admiral Gorshkov is equipped with hypersonic missiles, which reach five times the speed of sound. It also has on board Kalibr-type missiles, deployed in Ukraine.
