Three winter sports centres opened on Friday in East Cantons, Liège Province. They are Mont Spinette in Malmedy, the ski centre at Losheimergraben in Büllingen and the one at Herzebösch in Elsenborn.

The areas have between 10 and 20 centimetres of good quality snow, which allows cross-country skiing in great conditions. However, the situation on the roads is dangerous, leading to many collisions and skids.

Thanks to the weather conditions and the deployment of snow cannons, the ski slope of Ovifat is expected to be open from Saturday and to remain open for the rest of the week.

East Cantons, also known as Eupen-Malmedy, is a popular winter sports destination in eastern Belgium, on the border with Germany. It is home to some of the country's most elevated locations, including its highest summit, the 694-metre high Signal de Botrange.
