Since Saturday, traffic at Liège Airport has been severely disrupted by heavy snowfall, resulting in several aircraft being diverted to Brussels Airport Zaventem or Ostend.

Several aircraft that had landed were blocked by black ice on the taxiways. Despite the efforts of airport staff, the runways quickly became icy again due to persistent freezing temperatures. The airport was completely closed.

From Sunday morning, departing flights could resume, but landings were still only partially possible. "There is still one aircraft blocking access to the taxiway," airport spokesperson Christian Delcourt told Belga News Agency.

The airport operator expects the complete resumption of operations to be in the next few hours, depending on how the weather evolves. Extra staff was called in to clear the slopes of ice and make up for delays in unloading cargo planes.
