Two people have died and a further five injured after being stabbed on a train in Northern Germany. Police managed to apprehend the perpetrator at the Brokstedt train station, about 45 kilometres north of Hamburg.

The incident occurred at around 15:00 on a train which had been travelling from Kiel to Hamburg, confirmed the Interior Minister of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Official reports state that the assailant, whose motive remains unclear, was also injured.

As a result of the attack, the Brokstedt train station has been closed until further notice.
