Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian discussed the prisoner transfer treaty between Iran and Belgium and the procedure before the Constitutional Court at a meeting with his Belgian counterpart Hadja Lahbib, Mrs. Habib said on Wednesday.

“My counterpart referred to the treaty and the procedure before the Constitutional Court,” Ms. Lahbib told the House's External Relations Committee in response to numerous questions.

The treaty, approved by the House in July, allows the transfer between the two countries of persons sentenced to prison. The Iranian opposition in exile has appealed to the Constitutional Court for the suspension and abrogation of the treaty.

The Court suspended the text in December and is expected to rule on the annulment in early March.

The treaty would allow the exchange of Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele, detained in Iran since 24 February, and Assadolah Assadi, an Iranian diplomat sentenced in 2021 to 20 years in prison for an aborted attack on an Iranian opposition rally near Paris in 2018.
