Colruyt will open a second branch of OKay Direct, its automatic shop, in Lennik, just outside Brussels, in Flemish Brabant, the supermarket group announced on Tuesday.

This is the first test outside an urban environment.

OKay Direct stores are open 24 hours a day and operate automatically without a cashier. The products are located in shelves closed by a door, which is opened by a QR code. The technology detects what is removed. After paying, the customer can use the same QR code to leave the shop.

Colruyt opened its first automated shop at the end of 2021 in the centre of Ghent. The group had already announced its intention to open more in the near future.

This second branch is located in the car park of an existing OKay shop. It is housed in a converted high-tech container. The range is limited to some 200 products, with the emphasis on ‘fresh, on-the-go and quick meal solutions.'
