A cyclist was seriously injured in a traffic accident on Bondgenotenlaan in Leuven, Flanders on Saturday, De Standaard reports. The 22-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition, according to local police.
“The accident happened around 06:45, when the cyclist was riding in the direction of the Grote Markt,” said police spokesperson Mathieu Caudron. “A truck in front of her slowed down at Vital Decosterstraat to stop for a delivery and the cyclist wanted to overtake the truck. During the manoeuvre, however, she was hit by a De Lijn bus that was also travelling in the direction of the Grote Markt.”
As a result, the cyclist suffered a serious fall and was taken to the Gasthuisberg University hospital in a critical condition. The patient’s situation has now stabilised, and there is no longer any imminent threat to life, the police announced.

The Leuven public prosecutor’s office has appointed a traffic expert to the scene of the crash to establish the circumstances behind the incident. As a result of the accident, Bondgenotenlaan was closed to traffic in the morning.
