Over the last 20 years or so the average age of those getting married has crept up towards 40, according to figures from registration departments in communes across the country. In the year 2000, couples were getting married between 30 and 33 years old. In 2021, those figures were closer to 36 and 39.

Those getting married for the second time, after a divorce or bereavement, are likely to be between 43 and 48 years old, RTBF reports.

The civil status department in the Brussels municipality of Uccle, for example, recorded 256 marriages in 2021. The most represented age groups of those getting married were 31–35-year-olds and 36–50-year-olds. However, the trend is similar throughout the country.

The commune has seen a 10% increase in marriages in the 31-35 age group over the last two decades while the 21-25 age group has shrunk considerably.
