A road accident killed three people on Saturday evening in Lichtervelde, West Flanders. The driver of a car lost control of his vehicle and the three occupants, all of Polish nationality, died in the accident.
According to the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office, the driver was travelling at an excessive speed.
The accident took place at around 21:15 on the ring road around the town. The vehicle, a Maserati, hit a pedestrian island then several trees and ended up spinning out of control into a ditch. The impact broke the car in two. In the process, the three occupants were thrown out of the car and died on the spot.
According to the Flemish daily Het Laatste Nieuws, they were two seasonal construction workers –brothers aged 22 and 28– accompanied by their employer, believed to be 33.
