Dranouter: Folk festival adds Warhaus, Jungle by Night and more to 2023 line up

The annual Flemish folk festival Dranouter has announced the first seven names of its 49th edition, with big names such as Warhaus, Bazart, Jonathan Jeremiah or Merol added to the bill. The event, which began in 1975, will be held on 4, 5 and 6 August in Dranouter, near Ypres, in West Flanders.

On Friday 4 August, the Swedish band Hoven Droven will open the festivities with their traditional Swedish folk-rock repertoire. The men of Hoven Droven met in high school in Sweden and celebrated their band's 30th anniversary in 2021.

On Saturday 5 August, Belgian band Bazart, who are known for for their hit single 'Goud', will perform alongside the vintage soul of British musician Jonathan Jeremiah and the danceable jazz of Dutch collective Jungle by Night. The British musician Jonathan Jeremiah is a solo artist whose song A Solitary Man' was described as "elegant and soulful" by the BBC.  Jungle by Night thrive off of their creativity of fusing funk, jazz, dance music, krautrock and sing-along melodies.

Italy’s Mascarimiri, the Netherlands’ Merol and Belgium’s Warhaus will be on the bill for Sunday 6 August. Mascarimiri are an Italian musical group who describe their music as "mature" and "always innovative". Dutch singer-songwriter Merol released her first single on Valentine's Day in 2018 and has been growing ever since, winning her audience's hearts through her cheeky lyrics. Warhaus is the solo project of Maarten Devoldere, front man of the well-loved Belgian band Balthazar, whose solo music is described as danceable and fresh.

The previous edition attracted 51,000 festival-goers. The organisation hopes to do as well this year with a line-up that mixes Belgian and international bands and promising talents from the folk scene.
