The Brussels fire brigade was called out mid-afternoon on Wednesday for a smoke development at the Gare du Midi in Saint-Gilles. Smoke was billowing from underneath a metro train, and the station was subsequently evacuated by the fire brigade. The fire has now been extinguished.
“The fire was smouldering under a carriage of the train,” said Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade. “We made a hole in the floor of the car to put it out,” he said. The cause is thought to be accidental.
