Six years in prison requested for rape accused

The Office of the Public Prosecutor on Wednesday requested a six-year prison sentence for a 25-year-old man of Libyan origin prosecuted in the Liège Criminal Court for raping two prostitutes and attempting to rape a third.

The victims had been threatened with weapons or broken bottles before being forced to perform sexual acts.

Between 24 July and 17 August 2022, the defendant visited prostitution houses in Liege and assaulted three sex workers. The individual operated in the same way on each occasion: he used a homemade weapon, a nail tied to his fist or broken bottles to threaten the prostitutes and force them to perform sexual acts.

The man raped two of the victims and attempted to rape the third but she managed to free herself and raise the alarm.

The individual was arrested on the basis of extensive evidence. His DNA was found at the scene, witnesses saw him flee and he was also filmed.

The accused had adopted an “animal attitude” towards his victims, according to the prosecutor, who asked for a prison sentence of six years.

The defendant’s lawyer argued that his client had behaved irrationally because he had consumed illegal drugs and alcohol simultaneously. He asked for a suspended sentence.

Judgment will be pronounced on 19 April.
