For the first time since 1 January, the Belgian electricity market experienced negative prices thanks to generous wind and milder temperatures.

On the Belgian short-term market, a megawatt-hour cost an average of €19.47 on Friday but negative prices were seen for part of the day, down to -€12 per megawatt-hour.

The negative prices are explained by the expected windy day on Saturday, which will see wind turbines produce a lot of electricity. At the same time, there will be sunny spells and milder temperatures to lower demand, which dips anyway during the weekend. Elsewhere in Western Europe, prices will occasionally also fall below zero.
