A Michelin-starred restaurant located on the Belgian coast, Carcasse, won fourth place in the international competition "World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants" — a benchmark for meat restaurants across the globe.

The list awards the best steak restaurants in the world and is organised every year. After finishing in a remarkable eighth place last year, Carcasse has climbed up to fourth this year and, in doing so, also became the best steak restaurant in continental Europe.

The establishment, one of Belgium's most eminent, is widely known for putting quality meat in the spotlight by focussing on dishes that bring the produce straight from the butcher — more specifically, from Dierendonck, the most famous butcher's brand in the country — to the plate.

"Hendrik Dierendonck, the well-known butcher, breeder and restaurateur, has teamed up with chef Timon Michiels at Restaurant Carcasse to create a steak restaurant that makes a difference," the competition's website read.

"They have fully achieved this ambitious goal, because what awaits you as a guest at Carcasse is truly unique," adding that it should be added to the bucket list of every meat lover.

The eatery is located in Koksijde, a small town on the Belgian coast that has become somewhat of a place of pilgrimage for lovers of good meat. Diners sit at large tables dressed with distinctive red-and-white chequered tea towels traditionally found in a butcher’s shop.

The restaurant's interior also instantly calls to mind an authentic butcher’s shop, from the carcasses hanging from meat hooks to the large knives used as decoration.

More than 700 meat-based restaurants from all over the world were evaluated for the competition. Based on six main criteria, establishments were judged for the quality, the origin and selection of the meat, but also on the quality of service and knowledge of the product, the explanation of the cuts, and the restaurant's appearance.

This year's winner is Parilla Don Julio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Two other Belgian restaurants also feature in the ranking: Maven in Antwerp and Gillis in Ghent.
