A fire broke out on Tuesday morning at a former Arcelor Mittal site in Ougrée Seraing, province of Liège, the Liège Fire Brigade has announced. A municipal emergency plan has been put in place.

The fire spread shortly after 9:00 on Tuesday at the site of Arcelor Mittal’s blast furnace B. “The fire was caused by CO emissions via the drainage pipes in certain homes in the Biez-du-Moulin district. As a result, the communal emergency plan was activated,” the city of Seraing said in a statement.

The emergency services evacuated residents from Place Bourdouxhe, rue Davio, rue du Loup, rue Petite Commune and rue Cerfontaine.

Local residents were invited to go to the Ougrée sports hall, located on avenue du Centenaire, where they were taken care of by competent public services.

The Liège firemen were still at the scene of the fire around 14:00 on Tuesday.

The city of Seraing states in its press release that local residents will be invited to ventilate their homes for at least an hour once the situation has returned to normal.
