Investigations continued on Friday into an armed attack on a café in Anderlecht, police in the Midi area said on Friday.

The attack in the Andersen café in Rue Edmond Delcourt took place around 8 p.m. on Thursday, and involved a person or persons armed with a grenade and a firearm. The circumstances were still unclear, and it was not known whether a robbery was committed or how many people were involved.

The suspect or suspects threw the grenade while running away from the scene. The explosive device did not go off, but the area was evacuated and a security perimeter set up.

The explosive ordnance disposal service, SEDEE, was called to the scene to defuse the grenade which, the deminers discovered, was of the type used for training.

Once the risk of an explosion was ruled out, the security perimeter around the café was lifted at around 11 pm and the site was made accessible to traffic.
