Federal parliamentarian Sophie Rohonyi (DéFI) was appointed president of the Council of French-speaking Women of Belgium (CFFB) on Tuesday evening following a general assembly vote, the DéFI party said.

Running against Brussels parliamentarian Latifa Aït-Baala (Mouvement Réformateur), she was elected for a four-year term with 398 votes in favour and 58 against.

“The defence of women’s and girls’ rights has always been the guiding principle of my commitment,” the new CFFB president said.

In this respect, Sophie Rohonyi has worked during this legislature for real progress for girls and women, such as the imprescriptibility of paedophile crimes and the criminalisation of incest, the recognition of feminicide, the extension of paternity leave and the implementation of a plan to fight against intra-family violence,  DéFI recalled.

Created in 1905, the Conseil des femmes francophones de Belgique is an umbrella association that brings together some 50 women’s organisations. Its main objective is to “combat all forms of pressure and discrimination against women”.
