Belgian football player Dante Vanzeir will step aside from his new American club New York Red Bulls after he admitted to having used a racial slur during a match on Saturday.

Vanzeir, who played at the international level for the Red Devils, had already apologised for his racist remark on Sunday evening during the New York Red Bulls' match against the San Jose Earthquakes.

His club revealed that he had addressed the issue with his teammates on Tuesday morning and would be stepping away until further notice “to avoid further distractions,” with the league currently investigating the incident.

Saturday’s match was Vanzeir’s first start for the New York Red Bulls, having joined the side from the Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise. However, it remains to be seen what his future holds in the Major League Soccer (MLS) after the incident.

The MLS stated on Sunday that it took the accusations very seriously and promised to apply its “zero tolerance” policy against racism.
