A young worker was killed on Wednesday by a piece of construction machinery in the town of Jodoigne, in Walloon Brabant, the local labour auditor announced.

Firefighters from the Walloon Brabant rescue zone were called to a construction site at around 10:00 on the Chausée de Wavre. The young man, who was working in a trench at the time of the incident, was hit in the head and back by the bucket of the mechanised excavator.

The 25-year-old died of his wounds at the scene of the accident, despite the efforts of rescuers. The Walloon Brabant Labour Auditor has now opened an investigation into the accident.

Building site accidents in Belgium are a not uncommon occurrence but have dropped in recent years. In 2021, accidents in the sector fell 6.3% compared to pre-pandemic levels. Belgium has achieved a drop in accidents each year since 2014.
