Legislation on Belgian citizen service in preparation

Legislation offering federal status to the citizen service is being prepared, Economy and Labour Minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne announced on Thursday in the Chamber.

“A bill has been discussed once again in inter-cabinet meetings over the last few hours and I hope to have it validated in the government,” Dermagne said, adding that he welcomed the support the bill has received from the Minister in charge of the Self-Employed, David Clarinval (MR).

“For nearly 12 years, these citizen-service experiments have been developing,” Dermagne noted. “More than a thousand organisations are contributing to them in difficult circumstances, without a legal framework and with uncertainty about funding,” he added in response to questions from Marie-Colline Leroy (Ecolo), Georges Dallemagne (Les Engagés) and Jean-Marc Delizée (PS).

“It is time to provide this framework and this financing, and I am convinced that we can build bridges between the majority and the opposition to make it happen,” he concluded.
