A dead body was found in a stream by several girls of the Chiro youth association during their weekly activity in the Dentergem municipality in the West Flanders province on Sunday, announced the Bruges Public Prosecutor.
The police and fire service were immediately called to the scene; the Public Prosecutor's Office will now investigate the case further.
"It is said to be an elderly woman from Tielt who has been missing since New Year's Eve. The Bruges public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation to find the cause of death," Dentergem mayor Koenraad Degroote told VRT.
The site was completely evacuated and all members of the youth movement were taken home. According to the mother of one of the girls who found the body, she is hugely affected by the incident.
