Belgian falls to his death from French mountain

French police discovered the body of a 55-year-old Belgian man who fell to his death from a cliff on a mountain in the French Prealps on Sunday, Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

The victim reportedly fell almost 200 metres. His body was later found at the foot of the cliff, with French police having been searching for the man since Saturday.

The Belgian national was scheduled to pick up his girlfriend from Geneva Airport on Saturday. Failing to appear, his girlfriend reported the man as a missing person. Police were later able to locate his phone on Sunday morning, tracking him to the town of Saint-Paul-de-Varces, around ten kilometres from Grenoble.

The victim had fallen while attempting to climb the Roc Cornafion cliff. The area is a popular spot for avid hikers and skiers. The climb is known to be difficult and at points to walk turns into a climb. Many travellers bring specialised climbing equipment.

Police believe that he must have fallen while following a path between the cliff’s two peaks, at around 2,000 metres above sea level.

The Belgian fell nearly 200 metres down the slope of the mountain. French police have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances behind the 55-year-old’s fall.
