There are still several dozen pupils staying home at Zavo secondary school in Zaventem, headmaster Kurt Gommers reported on Thursday.

Around 600 pupils had not shown up at school on Monday, but since then, the number of absent pupils has systematically decreased.

On Tuesday, just under 350 pupils stayed at home. A day later, the number had dropped to 280. Yesterday, more pupils showed up to school again.

Headmaster Gommers earlier said he expected everyone to return to school as normal next week. In the past few days, extra police surveillance was always present at the school’s various campuses.

Several parents were worried about their kids returning to the Zavo school this week after reports of revenge attacks on the school had circulated online.

The messages called for revenge for the victims of last Friday’s incident at Zaventem station, in which a 22-year-old man from Etterbeek lost his life, and a 16-year-old young man from Brussels was seriously injured in a large brawl.
