Nearly half of Belgian entrepreneurs (49.9%) regularly experience stress and over half (51.2%) suffer from fatigue, according to a survey by prevention services group Liantis.

The survey, published on Thursday, also found that almost a third of business people (32.6%) are affected by insomnia.

Liantis is launching an awareness campaign, together with the Flemish employers’ organisation UNIZO, Dyzo - which supports independent contractors - and the Integraal organisation,  to encourage entrepreneurs to think about their own mental wellbeing and seek external help if necessary.

According to the results of the survey, which was conducted among 1,061 entrepreneurs in April, a greater focus on the origin of stress among business people is essential. In this regard, the study identifies financial concerns and a heavy workload as the main culprits.

According to UNIZO, a “tangible” reduction in administrative tasks would automatically lighten entrepreneurs’ workload, allowing them to spend more time with their families and on leisure activities.

As part of the campaign, a website has been set up to provide entrepreneurs with concrete advice and access to helplines.
