Belgium will lower its blood alcohol threshold from next month, with anyone who is drunk behind the wheel immediately having their driving licence revoked, announced Federal Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet.

From 1 June, drivers who have more than 1.2 per mille of alcohol (0.012) – down from the current 1.5 per mille (0.015) – in their blood will have to give up their licences for 15 days.

"We cannot tolerate disrespectful road pirates," Gilkinet declared in Parliament.

He also aims to further amend the Highway Code to find a better balance between pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and step up the fight against recidivism.
