Five offshore wind farms will have to repay around €190 million of a support mechanism received from the Belgian Government, De Tijd reports.

The estimate was put forward by Belgium's Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten, with the state set to benefit from a new law introduced last year for the first time.

On the one hand, the government supports wind farms when energy prices are very low and the infrastructure is not profitable, such as when electricity production is too high and wind turbines have to be disconnected.

On the other hand, when prices rise above a certain level and surplus profits are generated, these automatically revert to the state, which should see them add €190 million this year to their coffers.
